Scouting

What Do Professional Football Scouts Look For in a Player?

Young players training indoors while being observed

Every scout has their own eye, and every club has its own priorities. But across professional football there are common themes in what gets noticed. Understanding them helps players focus on what actually matters on a matchday.

Technique under pressure

Clean technique on the training ground is a starting point. Scouts want to see whether it holds up when space is tight, the opponent is close and the game is quick. First touch, passing weight, receiving on the half-turn and the ability to use both feet all matter.

Game understanding and decision-making

The best young players often look like they have more time. That usually comes from scanning before the ball arrives and knowing the next action early. Scouts watch the choices a player makes — when to pass, when to carry, when to keep it simple — as much as the execution.

Movement on and off the ball

Much of a game is played without the ball. Movement to create angles, runs that pull defenders away, recovery runs and positioning in defensive moments tell a scout a great deal about a player's understanding.

Physical qualities

Speed, agility, strength and the ability to repeat efforts all play a part. They are viewed in context: a late developer can look physically behind peers for a period, and good scouts try to account for that.

Football behaviours

Scouts look for behaviours they can actually see: reaction to mistakes, communication, willingness to receive the ball under pressure, body language and effort without the ball. These are observations about football, not judgements about someone's personality.

Position-specific requirements

A centre-back, a winger and a goalkeeper are judged on different detail. Our position-specific assessments reflect that.

Consistency, potential and current level

One great game rarely changes a decision; consistent performances do. Scouts also weigh current performance against how a player might develop — and different clubs will weight that balance differently.

How the T.I.P.S. framework fits

At The Academy Insider, assessments are structured around T.I.P.S. — Technique, Insight, Personality and Speed. It gives players a clear picture of how their performance was observed across each area. Read more in What is the T.I.P.S. assessment?

Get assessed

If you want an honest view of how your game is seen through a professional lens, a live scouting assessment or video scouting assessment is a good place to start. An assessment does not guarantee a trial or club interest — it gives you clear, practical feedback.

Frequently asked questions

Do all scouts look for the same things?

No. Clubs and scouts have different priorities depending on playing style, age group and recruitment needs. There are common themes, but no single checklist.

Is talent spotted in one game?

Occasionally a single performance prompts further interest, but decisions are usually based on repeated observation over time.
