Scouting

Full Match vs Highlights: What Should You Send to a Football Scout?

Rusty coaching players during a training session

Highlights reels are useful for a quick introduction. But a scout assessing a player properly usually wants to see far more than a selection of good moments.

What highlights do well

They show quality on the ball, finishing and individual skill. They are quick to watch.

What highlights leave out

Off-ball movement Most of a match is played without the ball. Movement, positioning and scanning rarely appear in a reel.

Decision-making A highlight shows the outcome; full footage shows the options available and the choice made.

Positioning and defensive work Tracking runners, covering space and pressing triggers are often invisible in highlights.

Reaction to mistakes How a player responds after losing the ball says a lot about their football behaviours.

Transitions The seconds after possession changes are where many games are decided.

Consistency Can the player perform for 70 or 90 minutes rather than for five moments?

What to send

Where possible, send full-match footage filmed from a high, central position, with your shirt number and position clearly stated. If only highlights are available, send them along with context about the match.

Send your game

Our video scouting assessments accept full matches and highlights from anywhere in the world. Plans are listed on the pricing page.
