Can an overseas player experience the standard of an English professional academy?
In the right circumstances, yes. Organised development fixtures, training experiences and appropriately structured camps can give young players a valuable benchmark. But playing a fixture against an academy is not the same as being offered an official club trial or being eligible to sign for that club.
Throughout my career I've helped create trialist teams and development opportunities that have faced professional academies across Categories 1–3. I've also worked with Scandinavian players travelling to the UK to experience English football and be assessed in a different competitive environment.
Why the experience matters
Young players often judge their ability against the opposition they know. When they face an unfamiliar team with a different tempo, intensity and tactical approach, they learn something important about their current level.
A fixture can highlight strengths, reveal areas for improvement and show how quickly a player adapts. I see that as a development opportunity first. Any potential recruitment interest is separate and cannot be promised.
What about under-18 international transfer rules?
Some overseas players may not be eligible to register with an English professional club before 18. That does not automatically mean they cannot take part in any training visit or properly arranged friendly. However, participation depends on the specific activity, travel/immigration conditions, governing-body rules, insurance, consent and safeguarding arrangements. We would check those requirements before confirming an opportunity.
Introducing our proposed 2027 Elite International Football Experience
We're exploring an assessment-led international camp in England for 2027. The concept is to invite talented players identified through The Academy Insider's live or video scouting process to train together, receive individual feedback and, subject to confirmed arrangements, play development fixtures against suitable English academy opposition.
Our aim would be to make the experience meaningful: a proper assessment before selection, high-level coaching, clear objectives and an honest review afterwards.
Important: This is a proposed programme. Dates, location, fees, eligibility, selection criteria and professional academy opponents have not yet been confirmed. Registering interest is not a guarantee of selection, a fixture, a club trial or a professional opportunity.

What I would want every player to take home
A clearer understanding of their level, specific areas to improve, experience of English football culture and a realistic development plan. Those outcomes matter whether or not a professional club eventually becomes interested.
