Football Video Scouting: A Smarter Way to Be Seen and Improve

Can a footballer be professionally assessed without a scout attending the match?

Yes. Good-quality match footage allows an experienced scout to review positioning, decisions, technique, movement and repeat actions. It does not replace every benefit of watching live, but it makes professional feedback accessible to players who may be hundreds or thousands of miles away.

At The Academy Insider, I wanted to build something more useful than a generic highlight-reel review. My approach draws on experience across Premier League and EFL recruitment, academy coaching, first-team management and international football. I have worked with players at different levels, including established professionals who value an independent view of their performances.

Why highlights are not enough

A highlight reel shows selected moments. A full match tells me what a player does between those moments: how they scan, react to transitions, support teammates, manage space and respond after mistakes. Those details are often essential to an honest assessment.

For that reason, I encourage players to supply the most complete, clear footage available, with enough context to identify their position and actions.

The T.I.P.S. framework

Our assessments use T.I.P.S.: Technique, Insight, Personality and Speed. These are established scouting lenses, although individual clubs may apply different definitions and scoring methods. The Academy Insider's own scores are independent evaluations, not official Premier League or EFL ratings.

Technique: What can you execute, under pressure and at match speed?

Insight: How do you read the game, anticipate situations and make decisions?

Personality: How do you respond to setbacks, communicate and contribute to the team?

Speed: Not simply sprint pace, but how quickly you recognise, decide and act, alongside physical speed where relevant.

What is the Insider Score and player card?

After an assessment, players receive structured feedback and an Insider Score out of 100 as an indicator of their current performance against our assessment criteria. The accompanying digital player card provides a clear snapshot of the overall score and T.I.P.S. components.

The most important point is that a score is a starting point for development, not a guarantee of professional ability or future selection. Subsequent assessments help identify patterns and progress. Where a monthly plan includes updated cards or reports, the precise update schedule should be shown on the live service page.

From assessment to individual coaching

I also work with players who want to act on the report. That can mean reviewing clips together, identifying training priorities and delivering targeted coaching sessions. Professional players sometimes ask for an outside perspective because even experienced footballers benefit from a fresh, objective set of eyes.

For international players, video scouting can be the first stage in a longer relationship. Live scouting overseas may also be considered by individual quotation, depending on location, schedule and availability.

Does a good score mean a professional club will sign me?

No. Clubs make their own recruitment decisions, and every player is assessed in context. Where a player demonstrates a suitable standard and the relevant permissions are in place, we may discuss whether a selective introduction is appropriate. We do not sell guaranteed trials or contracts.
